We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to join a leading insurance technology team in Sydney on a contract basis. This role offers the chance to work on high‑availability, mission‑critical systems that power core insurance operations, using the latest mainframe technologies.
Design, develop, and maintain COBOL applications in a mainframe environment (z/OS).
Write and optimise JCL scripts, DB2 SQL, and CICS transaction programs to support end‑to‑end processing.
Implement and consume web services and APIs using COBOL, ensuring seamless integration with modern platforms.
Debug and troubleshoot production incidents, applying root‑cause analysis to minimise downtime.
Collaborate with business analysts and client stakeholders to translate insurance domain requirements into technical solutions.
Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, retrospectives) and contribute to continuous improvement.
Document code changes, technical designs, and operational procedures for knowledge sharing.
8+ years of solid application development experience on mainframe platforms using COBOL.
Proven expertise with DB2, JCL, TSO, CICS, and web services/API development in COBOL.
Strong understanding of the insurance domain, particularly policy and claims processing.
Hands‑on experience supporting high‑availability production systems and performing on‑call duties.
Demonstrated ability to work directly with clients, gathering requirements and presenting technical solutions.
Experience working in Agile teams, comfortable with iterative delivery and rapid feedback cycles.
Optional but desirable: exposure to modernisation initiatives such as COBOL to Java migration or cloud‑based mainframe services.
Competitive daily rate of AUD 500.
Contract role with flexible start date and the possibility of extension.
